Illustration #4 - An Average Summer Day

Made this one last year as well. I have to say, this is one of my favorite illustrations I have ever done. It's a drawing also based off of the children's book idea I have. I wanted to make an single illustration but also incorporate elements of sequential art into it as well to tell the story of a single day full of fun. A little bit more exposition should also be given as well, I feel. The girl in the yellow shirt is Susie's friend, Gabi. Gabi is energetic, adventurous, brave, nice, and loves animals more than anything. She quickly becomes Susie's friend and introduces her to the imagination world. She was born without a left arm and many kids find that weird when she first enters school. However, Gabi's handicap is compensated for by her intelligent pet snake wrapped around her neck, Cody. He assists with tasks requiring two arms and even helps with homework, he has been Gabi's best friend for the longest time. She is a character I wanted to make to symbolize to kids that everybody is different and unique in their own way. Despite these weird and maybe even unsettling differences, some of these people can be very nice. Gabi is the complete opposite of Susie in almost every way, but the way they contrast somewhat makes them get along so well.

This illustration was made with Windsor and Newton Cotman pan watercolors and outlined in ink.
